What is “lurking”? Is it rude?

To "lurk" on a blog simply means to read it without ever commenting or otherwise letting the writer know you’re there.  In our opinion, no, it is not rude, though some bloggers would disagree with this.  Sometimes you simply don’t feel like you have anything to add to the conversation.

The flip side of this is that most bloggers love to receive comments.  If you’ve been enjoying the fruit of a blogger’s labor for some time, it’s polite to drop an occasional comment to say "I really enjoy your blog" or "thanks for the sharing your story".

Remember, a great way to increase readership of your own blog is to comment on other blogs. If you lurk all the time and no one knows you’re there, they won’t know to come and see what you have to say!

Now why didn’t I come across something like this in October last year when I’d just started! I’d have saved myself a few blunders and dragged myself up the learning a curve a lot faster!
    Cheers dears

Thank you for this information! Just like at a party I feel a little funny commenting on someone’s board, though I do love to get them. I keep seeing messages about “creepy lurkers” and I guess I am one of them. Maybe once I am more comfortable I will stop being a wallfower. Your site is very helpful.

I am new to blogging; and I don’t know how much is it important to the readers “not to the writer” to leave a comment? Is it an irrational thing if the readers don’t feel like to say “HI”? Are they obligated?

Where is the freedom? When a reader “MUST” shed a drop of his blood after reading a post on the wall.

    Think of that.
