Should I add a counter to my site?

by Melanie Nelson on October 12, 2006 · 0 comments

Having a counter on your site is one of the most fun (and addictive!) aspects of having a blog!  You’ll enjoy seeing where your traffic is coming from, and how your traffic is growing.  On the flip side, you’ll need to be careful to keep things in perspective.  Once you’re tracking your traffic, it’s easy to get obsessed with it!  Remember why you started your blog in the first place, and don’t let traffic (or lack of it) discourage you.

A counter is a nice security feature, as well.  Most counters will allow you to see how people are getting to your site–including if they’re getting there via questionable Google searches.

Several free and easy-to-use counters are available, and all come with step-by-step instructions for installing it on your blog.  Some of the more popular ones are BlogPatrol, LiveBlogStats, ShinyStat, Site Meter and StatCounter.
