I’m often asked the question, "Why doesn’t my new header fit in my
Typepad blog?" Improper fit is almost always the result of a change in
the size of the columns or going from 2 columns to 3 columns. The
header will not automatically change sizes if you change your template.
When putting a header design into your Typepad or Blogger blog it’s important to remember a few things:
- The header is simply a jpg or gif image. You can put a photo of your
own in as your header if you wish. All you need is some type of photo
editing software that allows you to crop to an exact size. If you use
Photoshop Elements simply click on the crop tool and then enter the
proper width in pixels (
i.e. 870px) into the width option in the toolbar. - Size depends on the number and widths of the columns.
- The header image is always left-justified, so for a centered appearance you’ll need to crop the image to the exact size.
A two-column layout in Typepad with a 500 pixel center column
and 200 pixel side column means that your header image needs to be
exactly 670 pixels wide for a perfectly centered appearance.
A three column layout in Typepad with a 500 pixel center column and two 200
pixel side columns means that your header image needs to be exactly 870
pixels wide for a perfectly centered appearance.
Note: Typepad places a border around the header image which is approximately an 1/8" wide.
For most Blogger blogs a 760 pixel wide image will give a centered appearance.
The height of the image is entirely up to you, but you don’t want to make your readers scroll too far to find your content.
