If I see an obvious typo in a permanent location of a blog (not just in the middle of a single post) would it be okay for me to politely mention it to the author? Would this be viewed as helpful or rude?

This is an excellent question. If you notice a typo in a permanent part of a blog (not just within a post)–for instance, a button or header–then you should mention it to the site owner. It may be best to try to find the direct address (most bloggers have an E-mail Me button of some sort or a link to e-mail in their profile) rather than leaving a comment. It’s a bit more private this way.

Of course, if you notice a typo within a post it’s not quite as big a deal. We all make mistakes. And, frankly, there are many people out there who aren’t as strong with grammar or spelling as others. If you correct them, it’s likely you’ll come off as annoying (at the very least).

So, to recap: Alert the blogger if it’s a permanent part of the blog (header, button, sidebar link, etc.); Do not alert the blogger if it’s within a post.

The bottom line: Be polite and remember the golden rule.

Great idea. I’m always misspelling words and using the wrong tents of words when eye right. ;)

    Good to know. :0)

  3. I’m sure this doesn’t happen much in the mom blog world, but some people purposely misspell words because people misspell them when googling them and it helps people find them. Just a bit of useless information for you… :)
