Develop an Elevator Pitch

Darren Rowse of Problogger mega-fame hosted the 31 Days to Build a Better Blog Challenge a few months ago. Unfortunately, I was buried in obligations and couldn’t devote the necessary time to the course. I’m starting today. (By the way, he’s made this course into an e-book and you can buy it for just $19.95.)

Day one’s task: develop an elevator pitch. Pretend you’re in an elevator and you have until the elevator reaches its destination to explain your concept to a key investor. That’s your elevator pitch. It has to be short and to the point. My elevator pitch for Blogging Basics 101 is

I write tips and instructions for beginning and intermediate bloggers. I take the “tech” out of technical writing and give readers something they can use.

I can expand on that as time allows, but those two sentences pretty much sum up what Blogging Basics 101 is all about. Once you have a clear elevator pitch, you’ll be surprised how often you use it:

  • I have several friends who don’t know what I do–elevator pitch without boring them with details (they don’t blog)
  • When I meet someone new at a blogging conference–elevator pitch and business card
  • When another parent asks what I do–elevator pitch and expand as necessary
  • Potential business partner–elevator pitch, business card, expand as necessary

What’s your elevator pitch? I want to know. I think it’s worth taking the time to think it through and I’d love to know what you come up with. Please leave me a comment with your elevator pitch!

I signed up and completed my elevator pitch. I’m working on my list post now and hopefully will have it completed for tomorrow. I’m looking forward to learning and growing as a blogger. Glad to join you.

I’m in, but already behind because of baseball. I’m hoping to do 2-3 each week since my schedule is nuts. The elevator pitch is throwing me but I KNOW I need to do it-and have for months!

Nice to see you here today!

I’m in. I’m behind (of course) and am not sure which blog I’m going to use…

I’m in!! I love blogging, but I want to get word out of my blog, any ideas on that?? Thanks!

I’m not sure what you mean by “get word out of my blog”. Can you explain?

I’m doing the challenge as well! I look forward to seeing so many “new and improved” blogs! :)

I love the idea of this challenge. BUt I’m a little confused… my blog isn’t really “techie”. Would it make sense to have a post about blogging technical stuff? And, I have no idea what a list post is. maybe, for us inexperienced bloggers, could you also explain what you want us to do? Thanks!

Texan Mama,

I’m not actually holding the Challenge here at Blogging Basics 101; it’s being hosted and run by Darren Rowse at http://www.problogger.net. You’ll need to sign up for the challenge over there and you’ll be signed up to receive the e-mails and daily assignments. I only posted a few of my thoughts here to encourage my readers to jump in and take part!

You don’t need to have a technical blog to participate. In fact, I’ll bet most blogs aren’t technical. ProBlogger’s 31 Day Build A Better Blog Challenge is meant to help everyone hone their blogging abilities and really focus their ideas. I’m a big fan of Darren’s (as is everyone on the web that I’ve run into!) and I know you’ll find some information that can help you.

Hi! I was delighted to see your post. I signed up, but hadn’t connected with others who had. I was going to just read and let it soak in, but now I’m going public with the tasks. :)

P.S. I heart list posts!

I just found the Blog Challenge and joined in just 3 weeks late. Hey, I am so new that I do not know what I don’t know. But I’m glad to find your site and hope that it will help me. I read about how you should do this and that but no one will tell you exactly which button to push to do it. This is what I need.:)
