« I use Site Meter's free service on my blog. What are those 0-second visits that Site Meter records? | Main | I have always used the real names of everyone in my family. I'd like to change all the names to nicknames, but I have over 500 posts. Is there a tool that can be used for automatically replacing the names of my family members in all of my posts? »

I see lots of posts ended with a cute "signature" of the author's name. How do you do that?

Adding a signature to your blog posts can add a sense of coherence to your blog design. If that's your thing, here's how you do it.

Before we start, please make sure the graphic you want to use is uploaded to Flickr, Photobucket, or another online photo hosting service.

Blogger

Note: The following instructions allow you to include your signature graphic on every post your write and publish. You do not have to manually add it once you have followed these instructions.

  1. Log in to your Blogger dashboard.
  2. Click on "Layout".
  3. Click on the "Template" tab.
  4. Click on "Edit HTML". You may want to make sure you backup your template before you start messing with it. That way at least you have a starting point to return to if something goes wrong. Which, of course, it will if you don't back up your template. So do that.
  5. Click the box next to "Expand Widget Templates".
  6. Find this line of code: <p class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-1'> and hit the Enter key so you are now just below that code.
  7. Paste this line of code into your HTML:
  8. <img alt='my email' src='URL FROM PHOTO HOST'/>

  9. Change the capitalized URL FROM PHOTO HOST to the actual URL for the photo you want to use. You can also change 'my email' into something more relevant, but it's not necessary.
  10. The end result should look something like this:
  11. <p class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-1'>
    <img alt='my email' src='URL FROM PHOTO HOST'/>

  12. Preview your template. If you're happy with the result, save your work. If you aren't, play with it a little bit. You won't learn unless you get dirty. Besides, you saved your original template, RIGHT?!?

Typepad
Typepad does not offer a way to put your signature at the end of your posts automatically. Instead, you must write your post, then add your signature graphic at the end. You have to do this for each post you write.

If you need help remembering how to add a graphic to your post, you can review our instructions.

WordPress

(These instructions provided by Jordan at Momma Blogga.)

As with Typepad, signatures on WordPress.com blogs must be added to each post.  If your signature is a graphic, you can upload it in one post and manually add it to each post.

  1. Upload your graphic on the Write > Write Post page, under the Upload tab (below the box to type your post in).
  2. After you have uploaded the graphic once, it will remain under the Browse tab (next to the Upload tab).  To add it to a post, select Full size from the Show: list and None from the Link to: list.
  3. Click Send to editor.

thank you SO much for this! I'd be wondering how to add this in.

Hellooooo, any instruction for WP? :-(

Thanks for this information. I have a friend who does this but didn't want to ask him for such a small thing. He has been so much help with the bigger things.

I did it! Thank you!

Wow - thank you so much for this info - I have always wondered how people put that in there and if I had to add it everytime!! It took me a bit of work to get it right, but I did and I love it! Thank you so much for all the great info you have on this site! I have loved being able to figure out things for myself and make changes to my blog, and having your great tips available make it so much easier!

Wowzers, thanks! That was SO much easier than I had anticipated... and to think I'd been cutting and pasting my html for my signature all this time! Thanks for the great tip!

Blessings!
